What to Wear for Charleston Senior Portraits
Charleston Senior Portrait Outfit & Style Guide
Choosing outfits for your Charleston senior portraits is one of the most exciting parts of planning your session. This is your chance to show off your style, wear outfits you love, and create a gallery that feels personal and reflective of who you are right now.
Charleston gives us so much to work with visually: pastel homes, colorful doors, cobblestone streets, waterfront views, blooming flowers, lush greenery, and historic architecture.
Over the years, I’ve learned a lot about what works well on camera, how outfits interact with Charleston’s different locations, and what helps sessions feel effortless and visually cohesive. My goal is to make the planning process feel easy, inspiring, and far less overwhelming.
Quick Senior Outfit Tips
Bring 2 to 3 outfits for variety
Include at least one solid-colored outfit
Long dresses and flowy fabrics photograph beautifully in Charleston
Bring comfortable shoes for walking downtown
Steam outfits beforehand
Be mindful of tan lines
Bring your cap and gown if you have it
Mix elevated and casual looks for a balanced gallery
Try on full outfits ahead of time, including shoes and undergarments
Plan Two to Three Outfits
I always recommend bringing at least two outfits so your gallery has variety.
I offer two session lengths, and the longer session naturally allows for more outfit changes. One thing many seniors do not realize is that outfit changes take more time than simply swapping clothes. Between changing outfits, switching shoes and accessories, adjusting hair and makeup, and getting settled back into shooting, each change can easily take 10 to 15 minutes or more.
That time comes directly out of shooting and exploring time, especially during downtown Charleston sessions where we are often walking between multiple locations. When planning outfits, think about whether you value more outfit changes, more locations, or more shooting time in each look.
For most seniors, two to three outfits creates the best balance without sacrificing too much time in front of the camera.
Your wardrobe also helps shape the pacing and locations we choose. Some seniors want most of their gallery centered around one dramatic dress with just a few casual images mixed in. Others prefer an even balance between multiple looks. Every session is different and built around what you want your photos to feel like, not a formula.
Outfit One: Long Dresses and Flowy Pieces
Long dresses, flowing skirts, and softer fabrics work beautifully in Charleston because they contrast against the city’s historic architecture and textured streets. The movement of the fabric adds softness and organic shape, especially near the water.
One thing I always recommend is looking for some structure or shape on top. Charleston is breezy, and dresses without definition through the bodice can sometimes add unnecessary volume when the wind catches them. A fitted or structured top keeps the focus on you.
This look could include:
A long maxi dress
A fitted top with a flowy skirt
A two-piece set
Wide-leg pants
A bold or pastel solid color or fun pattern
Outfit Two: A More Casual Look
Your second outfit can feel more relaxed while still looking polished and special. Some ideas:
A shorter dress
Tailored denim with a stylish top
Linen pants and sandals
Jeans with an elevated blouse
Sneakers paired with a casual dress
Shorter dresses can feel playful and stylish, but keep in mind that very short styles can sometimes limit seated poses or movement depending on the fit. Longer dresses and skirts naturally allow for more variety in posing and motion.
Outfit Three: Something Personal
This third look is optional, but it is often the most personal one. Maybe it is:
Your favorite top
A relaxed jeans-and-tee outfit
Your future college sweatshirt
A school t-shirt
A sports uniform
Something tied to your hobbies or interests
Suggestions When Choosing Your Outfits
There is no single right way to style your session. If you want three maxi dresses, go for it. I would simply recommend incorporating different colors, textures, or overall vibes so the gallery still has variety. And if you only want one main outfit, bringing a layer like a denim jacket, sweater, button-down, or scarf is an easy way to create a different look without needing a full outfit change.
Try Everything On Together Before the Session
Try on your full outfits ahead of time, including shoes, jewelry, and undergarments. What looks good hanging in a closet sometimes photographs very differently once fully styled together.
Variety Creates the Best Senior Galleries
Charleston is a beautiful place to lean into a more elevated look with long dresses, heels, and fashion-forward styling. That said, I usually recommend including at least one more casual look.
One elevated outfit
One stylish casual look
One personal or everyday outfit
At Least One Solid Outfit
I always recommend bringing at least one solid-colored outfit. Solid colors keep the focus on your face and expression.
Solid colors also photograph especially well in visually busy locations like downtown Charleston. Against colorful homes, textured streets, blooming flowers, and historic details, a solid lets you stand out without competing with the background.
Patterns can absolutely work too, especially when they are larger-scale and easy to read on camera. Tiny prints often disappear or become visually distracting in photos.
A combination of one solid outfit, one patterned outfit, and one additional look usually creates the best balance and variety throughout a gallery.
Best Colors for Charleston Senior Portraits
Charleston already has a lot of color between pastel homes, painted shutters, blooming flowers, waterfront blues, and greenery. Some of my favorite colors for Charleston senior portraits include: Rich reds, deep greens, teal, soft blues, warm neutrals, earthy tones, and jewel tones.
A bold dress or colorful outfit can look incredible against Charleston's softer colors and historic architecture.
White Dresses
Everybody loves a beautiful white dress for senior portraits, especially in Charleston. When possible, softer cream or ivory tones tend to photograph more naturally than stark bright whites (i.e., copy paper white). Cool white fabrics can sometimes wash out certain skin tones depending on lighting and complexion.
Shoes for Downtown Charleston Senior Portraits
Heels, wedges, and boots can elevate a look beautifully and often help seniors feel more dressed up and confident during portraits.
If you plan to wear heels downtown, I also recommend bringing comfortable sandals, sneakers, or slip-on shoes for walking between locations. Charleston's cobblestone streets and uneven sidewalks can be tough on heels over time.
Slides and backless shoes can shift during walking shots, so I always recommend bringing a second pair with a little more support as a backup.
Boots can also photograph beautifully, especially during fall and winter sessions.
Accessories and Meaningful Details
Accessories add personality and texture without needing a full outfit change.
Jewelry
Jewelry gives your hands something natural to do in photos. Adjusting a necklace, holding a pendant, or lightly touching a bracelet often creates more relaxed portraits. A meaningful necklace, bracelet, ring, or family heirloom can become one of the most sentimental details in your images.
Cap and Gown
If your cap and gown has arrived, bring them along. We can create fun, celebratory images, including cap toss photos. And if you do not love the way the gown fits, no worries. You can always drape it over your shoulder, carry it casually, or skip the gown altogether and just bring your cap, stole, hood, or honor cords for a more relaxed look.
Graduation only happens once, and those photos often become some of the most meaningful images in the gallery.
Eyeglasses
If glasses are part of your everyday look, absolutely wear them. Just make sure the lenses are clean before your session. If your glasses darken in sunlight, bring a non-transition pair as well.
Watches
A classic gold or silver is a yes! Smart watches with digital screens are a different story, so remove those before your session.
Layers
A jacket, cardigan, denim jacket, or scarf is an easy way to create a quick style shift without changing your full outfit.
Hats and Handbags
A stylish handbag or hat can add personality, texture, and additional shape to your photos. Round hats, structured hats, and smaller handbags or shoulder bags add visual interest without overwhelming the outfit. Hats are also versatile since they can be worn, held, or naturally interacted with throughout the session.
Nails
Your hands appear in photos more than you might think, especially in close-up portraits when your hand will frame your face. Fresh nails and pedicures make a noticeable difference, particularly during spring and summer sessions.
Seasonal Bouquets for Downtown Charleston Sessions
For my downtown Charleston senior portrait sessions, I provide a seasonal bouquet to help complete your outfits and tie colors together naturally throughout the gallery. Bouquets add depth and color while giving your hands something natural to interact with during portraits.
What to Wear for Beach Senior Portraits
Beach sessions at Isle of Palms and Folly Beach naturally feel a little more relaxed than downtown Charleston sessions, while still allowing room for elevated styling.
My beach sessions usually begin on the winding paths leading toward the shoreline. Flip flops, sandals, or wedges are great.
The beach and waterfront areas naturally have more wind, which is one reason flowy fabrics work especially well there.
Some beach looks that photograph especially well: Long dresses, lightweight fabrics, shorter casual dresses, jeans with a simple top, barefoot looks, and neutral sandals. A more elevated dress can create an editorial feel against the relaxed coastal setting.
Silks and Satins at the Beach
One thing worth knowing about silk and satin fabrics is that when the wind catches them, they can cling closely to the body. If you love those fabrics, we can capture photos in them but they will work less for photos with movement so a second outfit is recommended.
Beach Color Recommendations
Jewel tones photograph beautifully against the blues of the ocean. Whites, creams, taupes, soft blues, and earthy neutrals also work well along the shoreline.
Expect to Get Wet
The best beach portraits often happen near the waterline during sunset. Long dresses and wide-leg pants frequently get wet at the bottom, especially during shoreline shots. Plan for that ahead of time.
What to Wear for Fall Senior Portraits
Fall in Charleston opens up an entirely different set of wardrobe options.
As temperatures cool, you can incorporate more layers and texture into your outfits. Chunky sweaters, boots, denim jackets, flannels, and richer fabrics in deeper colors are all great choices. Charleston fall weather still stays fairly warm, especially early in the season, so lighter dresses can absolutely still work too, which gives you the opportunity to create two very different looks within the same session if you want. Deep greens, burgundy, camel, rust, navy, and earthy neutrals pair beautifully with Charleston’s greenery, brick pathways, historic homes, and softer fall light.
The Details That Show Up in Photos
Tan Lines
Be mindful of tan lines leading up to your session, especially during spring and summer. Bathing suits, sports bras, and athletic wear can leave noticeable lines that often stand out in photos, particularly with dresses or open necklines. They can also require significant additional editing afterward and, in some cases, may result in additional retouching fees depending on the severity and number of images affected.
Undergarments
Always try on your complete outfit beforehand, including undergarments. Lighter fabrics, open backs, fitted dresses, and thinner materials may require specific undergarments or nude tones underneath.
Wrinkles
Wrinkles show up in photos more than people expect because the camera catches every detail, especially on linen and lightweight fabrics. Steam or iron outfits before your session and bring additional looks on hangers to help everything stay smooth and photo-ready.
Pet Hair
I keep a lint roller with me, but if you have pets at home, give your outfits a thorough lint roll before packing them, especially darker outfits and black clothing. The camera catches everything, and pet hair always seems to show up in the most noticeable places.
Structure and Shape
Very shapeless dresses, overly boxy cuts, or outfits without structure do not always photograph the way people expect, even though they can be the most comfortable. For maxi dresses especially, some shape or structure through the top half will help create shape and more dimension in photos.
College T-Shirts and Sweatshirts
If you are bringing a college sweatshirt or t-shirt, keep in mind that large lettering across the chest can sometimes get cropped during certain poses. You may end up seeing only part of the school name depending on the composition. Not a reason not to bring it. Just something worth knowing ahead of time.
What I Have Learned From Real Sessions
Over the years, I’ve learned that outfits with some shape and structure tend to photograph much better than overly loose or shapeless pieces, especially outdoors in Charleston’s windier locations.
If your maxi dress or skirt has pockets, that is always a bonus. Pockets naturally give your hands somewhere relaxed to go during portraits and can make posing feel more effortless.
One thing worth knowing about downtown Charleston is that there are very few public restrooms throughout the historic district, so most outfit changes happen in the car. There are a few spots I know of, but planning ahead makes everything feel smoother during your session.
Bring a Backup Outfit
Even if we do not end up using every outfit or accessory, having options always helps. A backup outfit can save the session if weather changes, shoes become uncomfortable, fabric is not photographing the way you expected, or something wrinkles or stains unexpectedly.
Your senior portraits are a snapshot of exactly who you are right now, and your outfits are a big part of that story. Take your time choosing looks you love, bring variety, and do not overthink it.
With experience photographing seniors all over Charleston, I can help guide you toward colors, fabrics, and outfit combinations that fit both your personal style and the locations we choose, creating a gallery that feels cohesive, natural, and distinctly you.
