Charleston Senior Portrait FAQ
Hi, I'm Amy. I photograph graduating seniors across Charleston, from high school through graduate and medical school, including students from Bishop England, Wando, Philip Simmons, Academic Magnet, College of Charleston, MUSC, and Charleston School of Law, as well as families visiting the Lowcountry.
Below, you’ll find answers to the most frequently asked questions about my Charleston senior sessions, all grouped by topic. Jump to a section by clicking links or read through one by one.
1. Scheduling & Investment for your Charleston Graduation Photos:
When should I book my Charleston Senior Portrait session?
Spring, late summer, and fall are my most requested seasons, and dates fill quickly. I recommend reaching out two to three months ahead, but if you're working with a tighter timeline, contact me anyway. I often have flexibility.
Timing considerations:
Need photos for your yearbook page? Summer going into senior year is the time to book your high school senior portraits.
If you want to incorporate college gear, a pennant, or anything that points to what's next, whether that's College of Charleston, MUSC, Charleston School of Law, or wherever you're headed, spring of your senior year is a great time to plan that session.
Have a favorite bloom? Azaleas in spring, crepe myrtles in summer, the golden marsh grass in fall. If there's a specific backdrop or season that feels like you, let's plan around it.
Can I book a session with my friends or classmates?
Yes! Friend and group sessions are especially popular with College of Charleston and Charleston School of Law graduates. The cost is split, but each person receives their own gallery with individual and group shots. For details on how these sessions are structured and priced, visit my pricing guide.

2. Prep & Planning for Your Charleston Portrait Session:
How do I prepare for my senior session?
A senior session with me isn’t just about showing up and smiling — it’s a creative collaboration, and I’m here to help you feel confident, prepared, and excited for your shoot. Here’s how we’ll get ready together:
1. Find Your Vision:
After booking, I’ll send a short pre-session questionnaire to help me get to know you — your style, your story, and what kind of photos you’ve been dreaming about. You can share a mood board, a shot list, or just a few favorite images. Whether you already have a vision or need help shaping one, we’ll bring it to life together.
Once I have your responses, we’ll set up a planning call to walk through everything together — from locations and lighting to outfits and timing.
2. Select Your Wardrobe Begin pulling together your wardrobe and plan for a variety of looks:
Something dressy that brings out your confident side, long or short, whatever fits you
An outfit a step above everyday, think Sunday best
Your go-to everyday casual look
Something bold or colorful that shows your personality
At least one solid color
One timeless, classic outfit that will outlive any trend
For grad students: plan for one professional outfit. These translate beautifully to LinkedIn and personal branding use. For high school seniors: include something that shows your school pride, whether that's a color, a jersey, or gear tied to your activities.
Bring your cap and gown, hood and gown, or white coat. We'll grab a few shots in it. These are the photos that mark the moment.
Need help deciding? I have a prep guide and a shopping guide, and I'm happy to weigh in directly.
3. Take Care of You:
Stay hydrated in the days leading up to your session and be mindful of sun exposure. A sunburn or unexpected tan lines can be hard to work around. Avoid last-minute hair changes. If you're considering a spray tan, give it a few days before your session and pay attention to hands and feet.
Whether you do your own makeup or book a pro, the goal is even skin tone that photographs true to you. I have Charleston hair and makeup artists I'm happy to recommend.
3. Best Time & Locations for Charleston Graduation Photos:
Where should we take photos?
Charleston, SC has no shortage of beautiful backdrops for your graduation portraits. Here are some favorite locations for Charleston graduation photography:
Rainbow Row Area – There's more than just the famous painted houses; I have my own favorite stretch just around the corner – a tucked-away gem less known to tourists, with gorgeous colors and textures.
French Quarter – Charming alleyways and colorful doors perfect for unique Charleston portraits
College of Charleston – Classic architecture and brick pathways that photograph beautifully for high school seniors considering attending CofC, current CofC students, or any graduate who appreciates historic campus settings
MUSC Campus – Celebrate your medical, dental, pharmacy, or nursing achievement in the place where you've spent so many hours studying
Charleston School of Law – Commemorate your legal education at the Four Corners of Law at the intersection of Meeting and Broad.
The Battery & White Point Garden – Harbor views, live oaks, and stately homes that showcase Charleston's iconic landscape
Hampton Park – Always something in bloom with beautiful gardens and bridges
Isle of Palms – A favorite spot for Charleston portraits with soft sand and golden light
Waterfront Park – The pineapple fountain and harbor swings offer quintessential Charleston backdrops
Daniel Island – Beautiful oak-lined streets and waterfront views for Bishop England seniors
Magnolia Plantation – Historic gardens perfect for graduates who love nature and history. One of my favorite places to visit as there's always something in bloom. Note: an additional venue fee.
Want to include a meaningful location like your high school or college campus, your home or even your favorite golf course? I love that idea. We can absolutely incorporate personal places into your Charleston photo session.
Best time of day for Charleston portraits?
Golden hour, early morning or late afternoon, is my preference for outdoor sessions. The light is soft and directional, which means no harsh shadows, no squinting, and natural skin tones.
Best seasons for Charleston photography?
Every season works in Charleston. Here is what each one offers:
Spring (March-May): Azaleas and wisteria are in full bloom, temperatures sit in the 70s and 80s, and the color is everywhere. If you have a favorite bloom or a garden location in mind, this is the season to plan around.
Summer (June-August) Early morning and evening sessions are the move in summer. Midday heat and humidity are real, but the light at both ends of the day is beautiful, the greenery is lush, and the beach is always an option.
Fall (September-November): Temperatures drop into the 60s and 70s, the humidity breaks, and the light takes on a warmth and depth that is hard to replicate any other time of year. The golden hour stretches longer and the marsh grass turns. One of my favorite times to shoot in the Lowcountry.
Winter (December-February): Mild temperatures (50s-60s) and fewer tourists mean more space at popular Charleston locations
4. What to Expect During Your Session:
What should I bring to my session?
Outfits (on hangers!)
Props (college/graduate school gear, diplomas, instruments, flowers, etc.)
Academic regalia, white coat, or professional attire
Comfy walking shoes or flip-flops for easy on-and-off
A small bag to hold water, hairbrush, touch-up makeup
A helper (parent or friend). If you're under 18, a parent or responsible adult is required.
How long is the session?
I offer three session types plus seasonal mini sessions.
1. The Golden Hour Session is up to one hour on the beach at golden hour.
2. The Signature Session is 1.5 hours within one area, explored on foot.
3. The Full Experience is three hours across multiple locations.
4. Mini sessions are 15 minutes, held at set locations and times in the fall.
Can I bring someone with me?
Yes! I usually save a few shots at the end for family or someone special who joined. They are an important part of your life, and I love capturing those meaningful connections.
I'm awkward in front of the camera. Can you help?
I offer easy, natural guidance throughout your Charleston portrait session. We'll flow through standing, walking, sitting, lying, and leaning. Never any stiff posing.
5. Photography Style & Editing Approach:
What's your photography style?
Lifestyle meets documentary. Relaxed, expressive, and colorful. I love a mix of wide shots that showcase Charleston's beautiful scenery and close-ups that highlight your personality. Crouching in a field? That’s just not my style, it never feels natural.
What's your editing style?
Clean, vibrant, and true to color. I want your skin to look like skin. My style is neither light and airy nor dark and moody.
What if I have specific editing or retouching requests?
I'm happy to accommodate custom retouching, but highly in-depth edits may incur an additional fee.
What about blemishes or makeup?
Wearing a bit of makeup helps even skin tones. I remove minor blemishes in editing, but extensive edits or retouching requests may incur an additional fee.
6. After Your Charleston Session:
How many images will I receive?
You’ll receive all of the best digital images from your session. I thoughtfully curate and edit your photos, delivering them in an online gallery with full print rights. No picking favorites, they’re all yours to download, share, and print. While the final count depends on session length, most collections start at 60+ images, capturing a range of expressions, poses, locations, outfit changes, and a mix of wide-angle and tighter crops. With my documentary-style approach, I also include candid, behind-the-scenes moments, like a quiet laugh, a wind-blown hair fix, or a quick hug from mom.
And if you’d like a favorite image converted to black and white, just ask, it’s a simple request and can add even more variety to your gallery.
When will I receive my photos?
You'll receive a few images from the session as a sneak peek within 48 hours. Your full gallery is typically ready in two weeks.
How long will my gallery be available?
Galleries are typically available for 6 months after your session. I recommend downloading your images within the first 30 days.
7. Charleston as Your Backdrop
What makes Charleston the perfect location for senior portraits and graduation photos?
compact and walkable, with backdrops that range from historic and rustic to colorful, modern, and edgy. The beach is a short drive away. As a local, I know where to go and when, the spots that don't show up on anyone's list, and the exact time the light hits a particular street or courtyard.
How do Charleston graduation portraits differ from traditional school photos?
Traditional school photos are indoors, one backdrop, a few poses, five minutes. A session with me is the opposite. We shoot outdoors across multiple locations in natural light, moving through different settings as the session unfolds. Multiple outfits, real locations, morning or evening light.
For graduates of College of Charleston, The Citadel, MUSC, or Charleston School of Law, shooting here carries its own meaning. And for clients who travel specifically for their Charleston portraits, the city provides a backdrop no studio can replicate.
