5 Senior Portrait Tips from Emily Feinsod | Maplewood, NJ
Looking for the perfect senior portrait experience in Maplewood, NJ? You’re in the right place! Here are five top tips to ensure your high school senior’s photo session is fun, stress-free, and full of memories that will last a lifetime.
1. What to Wear: Keep It Comfortable and Authentic
Choosing the right outfit is key for your senior portrait session. Encourage your senior to wear clothes that reflect their personal style. Solid colors or subtle patterns work best, while accessories like hats, jackets, or jewelry can add personality. In Maplewood’s vibrant scenery, warm earth tones shine in the fall, while pastels and light neutrals pop beautifully in the spring and summer. If your senior prefers an urban backdrop, bolder colors can add striking contrast.
2. Posing Made Easy: Keep It Natural
For high school senior portraits, you want poses that feel natural while creating connection and visual interest. Genuine smiles, candid laughter, and organic movements often result in the best shots. Try leaning against a brick wall in Downtown Maplewood, sitting on the steps in Memorial Park, or capturing a candid walking shot. For a bold city aesthetic, consider a Jersey City mural backdrop or the iconic skyline view from Liberty State Park.
3. Top Locations in Maplewood and Beyond: Picture-Perfect Backdrops
Maplewood and its surrounding areas offer a variety of gorgeous backdrops for senior portraits. Check out these favorite locations:
Memorial Park: With open fields, footbridges, and a peaceful river, it’s ideal for natural, scenic shots.
Maplewood Village: Perfect for capturing a small-town urban vibe with colorful murals and charming storefronts.
South Orange Village: Artsy cafes, historic architecture, and Sloan Street’s vibrant energy make it a chic choice.
Millburn: Offers a mix of downtown sophistication and the nearby natural beauty of South Mountain Reservation.
Jersey City Murals: For seniors who want bold, artistic portraits, the murals provide a dynamic and colorful backdrop.
Manhattan Skyline: Liberty State Park’s skyline views offer a dramatic cityscape for those looking to make a statement.
Cross Estate Gardens: Located in Bernardsville, this spot provides elegant garden settings, rustic stonework, and blooming flowers.
High School Campus: Capture the nostalgia of senior year with portraits on the football field, in front of the school sign, or at favorite campus hangout spots.
4. Timing is Everything: Embrace the Golden Hour
For the most flattering light, aim for a golden hour session—an hour before sunset. Maplewood’s tree-lined streets and parks glow beautifully in this soft, warm light. For cityscapes or urban portraits, consider late afternoon or early evening to catch the mix of natural and city lights.
5. Relax and Have Fun!
Senior portraits are all about celebrating your teen’s unique personality and achievements. Encourage them to relax, be themselves, and enjoy the experience. Play their favorite music, incorporate hobbies or props, and laugh through the session. The more comfortable and confident they feel, the more their true self will shine through.
With these tips, your senior’s portraits will capture this exciting chapter in their life, leaving you with treasured memories and stunning images. Book your Maplewood, NJ
senior portrait session today and let’s create something unforgettable!

5 Senior Portrait Tips from Danielle Douglas | Raleigh-Durham, NC
Senior photo sessions are a big deal! My main goal is to make sure you have fun during your session and walk away with photos that feel like a true reflection of who you are at this important stage in your life. Here are my best tips to accomplish that goal.
In the Raleigh-Durham area, there’s no bad time for your senior photo session—it just depends on the vibe you’re going for.
Spring Senior Sessions in Raleigh are dreamy, with blooming flowers and soft, warm light. Parks and gardens like WRAL Gardens usually have something blooming from early March through May. The North Carolina Museum of Art really comes to life later in the spring with vibrant green grass and wildflowers.
Summer Sessions are golden and full of sunshine! I know a few hidden gems in the Raleigh area that give total seaside marsh vibes. Sunrise sessions at nearby lakes are a stunning way to stand out.
Fall in North Carolina is simply gorgeous. Peak leaf color usually hits from late October to early November.
Winter Sessions bring a peaceful, cozy vibe with soft golden light and tall winter grasses. You just never know what you're going to get in NC, and that’s part of the fun.Pick a Location That Feels Like You
The spot we shoot at totally sets the tone for your photos. Want something modern and edgy? Think downtown Raleigh with its cool murals, urban rooftops and city backdrops. More of a nature lover? We’ve got flower fields, parks, lakes, and trails. Your location should reflect you.Outfits = Confidence
The right outfit makes you feel amazing—and that confidence shows. I recommend at least two outfits: one casual and one dressier. Want to add a third? Go for something bold, meaningful, or even a nod to what’s next (like a college tee or sports jersey!).There’s No “Right” Way to Pose
The best photos happen when you’re relaxed. I’ll guide you with easy prompts, but you don’t need to “pose.” Be yourself—that’s where the magic is.Let’s Chat Before the Big Day
Take me up on the pre-session call or meetup! We’ll talk through your vision, plan outfits and locations, and make sure everything feels relaxed and fun going into your shoot.

5 Charleston Senior Portrait Tips from Amy Quinn Hill
Charleston has a lot going on visually. Historic architecture, colorful facades, live oaks, marsh, and beach all within a short drive of each other. That variety is one of the reasons I love photographing seniors here, but it also means a little planning goes a long way.
1. Know What Locations Actually Look Like in Photos
Not every beautiful spot in Charleston translates the way you expect on camera. Some of the most photographed streets are also the most crowded. Some parks look completely different depending on the season. Before your session, spend some time looking through full session galleries from your photographer, not just highlight images, to get a realistic sense of what each location looks and feels like in photos. If you have a specific spot in mind, mention it. If you do not, share a general vibe and let your photographer build from there.
2. Build Your Outfits Around Your Locations
Charleston's backdrops are already colorful, which means your outfit needs to work with the specific setting, not just look good in a mirror. In the French Quarter and South of Broad, bold and saturated colors stand out against the pastel facades. At Hampton Park, avoid dark greens and navy since they blend into the foliage. At the beach, soft creams and jewel tones both work but for completely different reasons. Bring two to three outfits and think about how each one relates to where you will be standing.
3. Posing Starts With Your Body Not Your Face
The most common mistake in senior portraits is trying to pose your expression before your body is in the right position. Start with your spine straight, transfer your weight to one hip, angle your body slightly to the side, and let your arms fall naturally rather than pressing them against your sides. Once your body is positioned well, a natural expression follows much more easily. I use a simple framework with every senior I photograph to get them there quickly without it feeling awkward.
4. Plan Around Tan Lines Not Just the Weather
Charleston's sunshine is real and so are the consequences for portrait sessions. Swimsuit strap marks, sports bra lines, and uneven tans from outdoor activities all show up on camera and can require significant editing. If you are wearing strapless or off-shoulder looks, plan your sun exposure in the weeks before your session. A natural, even glow is beautiful. Strong lines across your shoulders and chest are harder to work with.
5. Fall and Spring Are Both Strong Seasons But for Different Reasons
Spring in Charleston means azaleas, wisteria, jasmine, and soft light in the parks. It is the most popular season and it books the fastest. Fall brings something different: lower sun angles, longer golden hour, cooler temperatures, pink muhly grass along the paths, camellias starting to bloom, and marsh grass turning golden. Summer works well for beach sessions at golden hour. Winter downtown is quieter and the light on a clear day is some of the cleanest of the year. There is no wrong season. There is just the right one for what you want your gallery to feel like.
