Recently, I was hired to photograph a bachelor party's cigar rolling event, a celebration of friendship that felt thoughtful and meaningful. When I first received the inquiry, I honestly wasn't sure what to expect, as I had never photographed a bachelor party before. But the moment I spoke with the friend who was planning the surprise, I knew this was something special. He told me they wanted to give their friend a thoughtful gift—a way to remember the weekend. They valued their time together and wanted candid photos that reflected the laughter, connection, and fun they shared during the event.
Fifteen friends had traveled from across the country, from the guest of honor’s high school, college, and work circles. Some had not seen each other in years, and the excitement was clear. The cigar rolling event was a key part of their long weekend planned with golf, dinners, and an evening out. The friends even dressed for the occasion, which gave the afternoon a polished, celebratory feel.

A Classic Charleston Setting
For this special event photography session, they rented a classic Charleston Single in the Cannonborough-Elliotborough neighborhood, an area known for its historic homes and leafy streets. The house itself had all the character you'd expect—tall, narrow, and painted a soft mint green, with long wide porches that caught the afternoon breeze.
The cigar rolling event took place in the backyard, where friends gathered around tables with good drinks in hand. They had hired a professional cigar roller who demonstrated the craft, sharing insights about the process and helping them roll their own. The friends also took time to catch up, enjoyed each other’s company, and leaned into the rare opportunity to all be in the same place at the same time.
How I Work During Special Events
My approach is simple: I observe and capture moments as they naturally unfold. I walk the scene, look for the best light and angle, and compose each shot carefully. While I don't direct much, I will step in when it’s needed to make sure we get the best shots. My goal for every event photography session is to deliver a gallery of images that tells the full, authentic story.
During this event, I moved between conversations on the porch, the activity around the cigar table, and the bursts of laughter that seemed to ripple through the afternoon. I also captured the fun and playful "awards ceremony" they held, complete with trophies for their golf tournament. I scouted a weathered cement wall just down the street that made the perfect backdrop for group portraits. We took a short walk and created a set of strong, well-composed images that balanced the relaxed atmosphere with a sense of occasion.
