I was finishing up a two-hour senior portrait session with a family who had traveled from Georgia. We had started in the French Quarter, moved through South of Broad, and ended at the gazebo in White Point Garden just as the sun was setting. As we wrapped up the final shots of the evening, I noticed a young man nearby with a sweet smile on his face, patiently waiting to catch my attention.
It was pure serendipity. He was visiting from Montreal and had been scouting the area for the perfect location to propose to his girlfriend later that week. Standing there beneath the live oaks with the gazebo behind him, it was easy to see why he had chosen this exact spot. We connected right there as the session ended, and we immediately began planning the details.

We scheduled the proposal to happen during golden hour so the warm evening light would be working with us when the moment came. At White Point Garden in June, that window is generous and the way the light falls through the live oaks at that hour is hard to replicate any other time of day.

Capturing a Surprise Proposal Without Interrupting the Magic
One of the most important parts of proposal photography is staying invisible until the moment calls for it. I arrive early, test the light, and scout the surroundings so there are no surprises on my end. With a zoom lens I can stay far enough away to go unnoticed while still capturing every expression and reaction up close. You will not know I am there until it is over.
And if someone happens to be in the way, I stay calm. Once, during a proposal at this very location, a large bachelorette party had stopped right where my client was about to propose. He was less than a minute away. I approached them, explained what was about to happen, and they moved without hesitation. They ended up cheering for the couple and as a thank you I captured a few shots of them too. A genuinely Charleston moment.
I was in position and ready when he got down on one knee. She paused in pure surprise. I moved with the moment, step by step, capturing the emotion as it unfolded in real time. After she said yes and they had that first quiet breath together, I introduced myself and congratulated them before we moved into a relaxed engagement session through the streets of South of Broad.
