Charleston Beach Family Photo Session Guide and Tips
Some of the most natural family photos happen at the beach. Kids can run barefoot through the sand, chase waves, collect shells, and explore without being confined to one spot. With open space in every direction, a breeze off the water, and the sound of waves in the background, families tend to relax and settle into the moment quickly.
That freedom is one of the reasons I love photographing families at the beach. The focus shifts away from posing and toward connection. Parents can play with their children, walk hand in hand, or simply enjoy being together while I document the moments as they unfold. During the warmer months, the shoreline is often a few degrees cooler than inland areas, making sessions more comfortable for everyone.
Planning a Charleston beach family photo session? Whether you're a local family or visiting the Lowcountry on vacation, this guide covers what to wear, what to bring, when to book, and what to expect from start to finish.

What Should We Wear for a Charleston Beach Photo Session?
What you wear affects both how your photos look and how you feel. Color is the most important decision. The right colors bring warmth, softness, and cohesion. The wrong ones can feel flat or jarring against the sand and water.
Colors that work well at the beach:
Muted jewel tones: sage, dusty rose, rust, mustard, plum
Earthy shades: terracotta, olive, golden beige
Soft neutrals: off-white, warm taupe, soft gray
Muted pastels: powder blue, soft peach, dusty lavender
Avoid neon, stark white, bright primary colors, navy, and black. They tend to feel harsh or flat in beach light.
Start with one key outfit, often Mom's dress, and build the palette around that.
Tips for Outfits That Work at the Beach:
Coordinate, don't match. Choose 2 to 3 main tones and layer in neutrals like cream or taupe.
Complementary tones like dusty blue and peach create natural variation without looking too matchy.
Flowy dresses and skirts move well in a breeze and add life to the photos.
Avoid silks and satins. They cling to your body when the wind picks up and are difficult to manage during a session.
Avoid ruffles at necklines and shoulders. They tend to blow into faces.
For little girls, softly pull hair back or use a headband to keep it out of their face.
Do not wear anything you are not okay getting wet.
Wear easy-on/easy-off shoes or sandals. No socks.
My least favorite wardrobe combo? Denim and white button-downs. We can do better.
My Top Tips for a Relaxed Beach Photo Session
Schedule your session on a weekday if possible. Fewer crowds, more space, and a more relaxed pace overall.
You will be barefoot for most of the session so treat yourself to a pedi before you come, whether that is a DIY at home or a trip to the nail salon. Guys and kids, make sure feet are clean and toenails are trimmed.
If you are here on vacation, book early in your stay. That gives us flexibility to reschedule if weather does not cooperate, and it reduces the chance that someone shows up sunburned from day three at the beach.
Feed and hydrate the kids before the session when possible. Well rested, fed children make for a much more relaxed experience for everyone.
Skip the sunscreen right before your session. Sand sticks to it.
Music helps. Let me know your favorite genre and I will have it playing when you arrive.
Kids do best when they can play. I give them space to explore, search for shells, and be themselves. The best moments come from that.
Your hair will move at the beach. Bring hair ties and bows for little ones to keep hair out of their eyes. If you use hairspray, apply a little extra before you come. And if your vision is perfectly styled hair that stays in place all session, the beach may not be the right location for you.
The best photos happen in between. Walking from one spot to another, playing, laughing about something unrelated to the session. When you forget about the camera is usually when I get the shot.
Treat yourselves afterward. Ice cream after a beach session is a tradition worth keeping.
Pack a small bag:
Clear drinks to avoid stains
Non-messy snacks. Fruit snacks. Not chocolate
A blanket or lightweight wrap for sitting and snuggling
Sand toys for the kids
Wipes, a brush, and touch-up items
A change of clothes for little ones
A towel to dry off sandy or wet feet. Most beach access points do not have a water spigot so a towel is the easiest way to clean up before getting back in the car.
When to Schedule Your Charleston Beach Family Photography Session
Sessions start about one hour before sunset for the best light. Here’s a general guide:
June: 7:00 PM
August: 6:30–6:45 PM
September: 6:00 PM
October: 5:30–5:45 PM
Not a sunset person? Morning sessions starting just before sunrise are equally gorgeous. The golden hour shifts throughout the year, and I’ll confirm the exact time when we book.
Beach sessions are not limited to summer. Fall and spring are often less crowded and still beautiful. Bring layers for cooler months. One of the most beautiful parts of living in the Charleston area is having year-round access to our beaches.

Accessibility Considerations for Your Charleston Beach Session
If someone in your group has limited mobility, let me know. I can recommend access points with boardwalks and bring a lightweight chair to make sure everyone is comfortable.
Weather Backup Plans for Lowcountry Beach Sessions
Weather runs the show at the beach. Here is how I handle it:
Light rain day of session: Post-rain skies are stunning, and the weather in Charleston can shift quickly. If it looks like a passing shower, we’ll stay in close contact and decide together whether to wait it out, adjust timing, or pivot to a covered location. Flexibility is part of the process—and some of my favorite images have happened just after the rain.
Wind > 15 mph: We reschedule. Too hard to shoot.
Overcast days: Actually amazing. Soft, even light for everyone.
Full moon? It adds extra glow to your evening session.
What to Expect During Your Beach Family Photography Session in Charleston
We begin on a shaded path framed by wild grasses and sea bush. From there, we move into open sand and eventually toward the water’s edge.
Beach path: Soft, filtered light and gently shifting grasses create a peaceful start and a quiet space to settle in.
Dunes: While we never walk on the dunes themselves, they serve as a stunning backdrop and add texture and natural layers.
Open sand: Space to move, play, and interact freely. Perfect for walking shots, spins, and shared laughter.
Water’s edge: The session ends here as the sun dips low, offering glowing reflections, silhouetted hugs, and a chance to get your feet wet.
Throughout the session I will guide you with relaxed direction and natural prompts. No stiff posing. Just gentle nudges that bring out the connection between you. As the sun drops lower it will backlight your hair and skin with that warm rim light that is one of my favorite things about golden hour at the beach.
One of my Favorite Local Beaches: Why I Love Isle of Palms for Family Photo Sessions
Isle of Palms is one of my favorite Charleston beaches to photograph families. I know this beach well and guide my families to quieter access points down Palm Boulevard, away from the pier and the crowds. Parking is easy, and the setting offers a natural mix of soft dunes, sea grass, and open sand. Unlike Folly or Kiawah where the tide can significantly narrow the shore, Isle of Palms is expansive enough that there is always room to work regardless of where the water's edge is. While Sullivan's Island is lovely, it does not allow professional photography, which makes Isle of Palms a more flexible and reliable choice.
Planning a Charleston Extended Family Beach Photo Session
Large family beach sessions are a favorite of mine. It is not often that everyone is in the same place at the same time, and when they are, it is worth documenting well.
The session is time spent together, enjoying each other's company, while I guide you through the evening. There is room for every combination, the full group, individual families, cousins, grandparents with grandkids, and more.
Getting everyone's outfits to work together is especially important with larger groups. I can help you put together a simple color palette to share with the family before the session so everyone shows up looking pulled together without being too matchy.
Beach sessions are not just for families. I also photograph senior portraits for high school and college seniors and couples and engagement sessions at the beach. The location works just as well for two people as it does for twelve.
